In a strong condemnation of both the central and state governments for their failure to resolve the ongoing four-month-old crisis, the Committee on Mass Movement against Assam Rifles has resolved to launch a people’s disobedience movement against the government with immediate effect.
During a press conference held at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai under Imphal West on September 1, Jenifer, a member of the Committee on Mass Movement against Assam Rifles, stated that Manipur has been in a state of unrest for the past four months, resulting in the loss of many lives and properties.
“However, both the state and central governments have failed to address this issue till date, which is highly condemnable,” she said.
Jenifer further alleged that central and paramilitary forces, which were deployed in the state for the safety and security of its people, are instead supporting miscreants rather than controlling violence. “The committee strongly condemns such biased nature of central forces and paramilitary forces,” she added.
She also criticized the state government for convening an assembly session for only 12 minutes amid this crisis, calling it a mockery of Indian democracy and seemingly unconstitutional.
“As the government is no longer able to protect their people and follow the constitution, there is no point in following the government by public. With this view, the committee resolves to launch people’s disobedience movement,” she added.
As part of this movement, womenfolk will stop accepting relief material or aid from central or paramilitary forces. Government employees, both state and central, should attend offices and those protesting will stop using state and central government vehicles.
However, services such as electricity, water supply, solid waste management, and medical supply will not be affected by this movement. Anyone who goes against this movement should be held responsible by themselves for any consequences, she said.
