Woman Delivers Baby Boy in Ambulance; Concern Raised over Hospital’s Limited Facilities

Date:

In a shocking case a 25 year old woman identified as Kalyani Bhoye, with complications in pregnancy delivered a baby in an ambulance with the help of a doctor onboard. The delivery happened when the pregnant woman was being shifted from a rural hospital to neighbouring Thane, the officials said on Tuesday.

As reported by the medical superintendent Dr Yadav Shekhare to the news agency PTI, the Wada Rural Hospital in Maharashtra’s Palghar district lacks specialised facilities for managing such critical maternity cases. And the “poor road conditions” increased the complication in the process of shifting the woman to a hospital in Thane for better care, Shekhare said.

Kalyani Bhoye, suffering intense labour pain, was brought to the rural hospitals by her family members on early mornings on December 13.

The on duty doctor detected that the foetus’ heartbeat was erratic and the child had passed meconium (stool) in the womb, the official revealed.

The doctor referred the woman immediately to the Thane Civil Hospital, located 75 km away, for advanced treatment.

However, just 10 kilometers into the journey, the poor road and bumpy roads demanded the woman’s delivery inside the ambulance, the health official revealed.

For  providing the immediate post delivery care, the ambulance returned to the Wada Rural Hospital, where both the mother and the newborn baby boy were provided with necessary medical treatment, Dr Shekhare said

Dr. Shekhare commended the on-duty doctors for their proactive efforts, emphasizing their dedication to saving lives despite the hospital’s limited resources. “The doctors swiftly made the decision to transfer the patient to a more advanced facility, putting her safety first. Their quick action, along with the presence of a doctor in the ambulance, facilitated a successful delivery under difficult circumstances,” he said.
