Late last year, Tamil Nadu’s Kotturpuram police arrested 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a biryani hawker and the sole accused in the Anna University case, for allegedly trespassing into the university and assaulting a second-year student.
In her police complaint, the woman stated that on December 23, while she was with her male friend behind a building, the accused threatened them. He first attacked her friend, a third-year student, before sexually assaulting her. She lodged the complaint the following day at the Kotturpuram all-women police station. The incident sparked a major political uproar in the state.
