A seven-month-old fetus was discovered abandoned in a garbage bin in Mumbai, according to police reports. The grim find was made on Monday afternoon by a passerby, who spotted the fetus in a bin outside the Ashtavinayak Society building in the Charkop area.
Upon receiving the alert, police arrived at the scene and transferred the fetus to a hospital for a post-mortem examination, a Charkop police official confirmed.
The official stated, “We are looking into whether there is any evidence of a newborn’s death being concealed and the body disposed of. We are also gathering information on pregnant women in the area, as well as those who have recently given birth.”
The police added that they are awaiting the post-mortem report, after which a case will be filed.
Similar Cases Years Back
In 2012, a fetus was discovered at the New Delhi Railway Station, drawing significant media attention and sparking discussions about maternal health and the societal pressures that may lead to such tragic outcomes. The discovery came shortly after the body of a child was found in the same area, leading authorities to launch investigations into both cases.
In 2022, another incident occurred when morning walkers in a central Delhi colony discovered a fetus abandoned in a garbage bin. Authorities were alerted, and investigations were initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
Similar cases have been reported in Mumbai, including the recent discovery of a seven-month-old fetus in Charkop on December 30, 2024. Police are investigating whether the death was concealed or the body illegally disposed of, with a particular focus on local pregnant women and recent mothers.
