APCR Commends Delhi Police for Maintaining Peace During Festive Period in Uttam Nagar

Date:

The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) has commended the Delhi Police and district administration for their role in maintaining peace and security in Uttam Nagar during a series of recent religious festivals, including Eid-ul-Fitr, Ram Navami, and Hanuman Jayanti.

The appreciation follows a March 19, 2026 order by the Delhi High Court in W.P.(CRL)-896/2026, issued in response to a petition filed by APCR. The court had directed authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure law and order and to facilitate the peaceful observance of religious events in the area.

According to APCR, the Delhi Police implemented these directions effectively through a combination of preventive and community-oriented measures. These included engaging local stakeholders, forming peace committees, conducting regular flag marches, and deploying adequate security personnel to deter potential disturbances.

The organisation noted that on March 21, coinciding with the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr, a large crowd gathered near JJ Colony and the Uttam Nagar East Metro Station, allegedly attempting to create unrest. However, timely intervention by the police, including the detention of individuals suspected of inciting disorder, prevented escalation and ensured the situation remained under control.

APCR further stated that many in the crowd appeared to be individuals from outside Uttam Nagar, possibly responding to calls aimed at disrupting celebrations. In contrast, local residents across communities were said to have cooperated with authorities in maintaining calm. Measures to restrict the entry of potential troublemakers into the area were also highlighted.

Security arrangements remained in place during Ram Navami on March 26 and Hanuman Jayanti on April 2. Religious processions on both occasions were conducted peacefully, with coordination between authorities and community members.

APCR said that both the High Court’s intervention and the police response have contributed to restoring confidence and fostering goodwill among residents. The organisation expressed hope that similar approaches could be adopted in other communally sensitive areas across the country.

It also urged authorities to continue their efforts by conducting a thorough investigation into individuals or groups allegedly involved in attempts to incite communal tension in the lead-up to Eid-ul-Fitr.
