As many as 193 people who were declared foreigners by Assam’s tribunals have been forced into Bangladesh in the last two years, the data submitted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed which was submitted in the Assembly on Monday.
Out of 193, one is an infant girl who was forced across the border with her mother who was a declared foreigner, 67 of them were “expelled” under the 1950 Immigrants Expulsion from Assam Act.
As reported by the Scroll, the Bharatiya Janata Party has said that the party had sent as many as 1,679 undocumented immigrants to Bangladesh in the last two years.
The data was the response to All India United Democratic Front MLA Badruddin Ajaml amidst the ongoing Assembly session. It was presented on the same day as that of when the Supreme Court set aside Gauhati High Court judgements. The judgements declared 27 persons to be foreigners.
Sarma has previously said that illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country have been ‘pushed back’ under provisions of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act (IEAA), 1950.
In response to another question which was raised by Congress MLA Nurul Islam, Sharma said that Assam currently has 91,385 “D-voters” (doubtful voters) on its electoral roll. Out of 91,385, 56,728 are declared foreigners. They have been declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunals. Furthermore, Sonipath district has the highest number of D voters which records to 13,719, followed by Barpeta with 8,081.
Meantime, on Monday the government in response to the question of Ajamal, on the number of deported persons who have been appealed in High Court and Supreme Court, the government said that no “identified illegal immigrant is repatriated if any appeal is pending”
Sarma said that the state made sure that the human rights of the migrants were protected and highlighted that illegal immigrants with pending appeals in the court had not been repatriated.
