Aban Ahmad, the youngest son of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, was killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district on Thursday while travelling to meet his jailed brothers. Another occupant of the SUV, identified as Sonu, also died in the crash, while three others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a government hospital, police said.
The accident occurred at around 10:30 am on the Kanpur–Jhansi highway in the Poonch police station area. According to police, the driver allegedly lost control of the SUV, which rammed into a road divider with great force. Local residents alerted the police, who reached the spot soon after and launched rescue operations. The injured passengers were taken to the Government Medical College in Jhansi for treatment.
Senior Superintendent of Police BBGTS Murthy said senior officers visited the accident site and supervised the investigation as well as the legal formalities. Police are examining the circumstances that led to the crash, though initial findings suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Police said Aban, a resident of Prayagraj, was travelling to Jhansi to meet his brothers Umar and Ali, who are lodged in separate jails in Uttar Pradesh. His family has been informed about the accident, and further legal procedures are being carried out.
Aban was the youngest of Atiq Ahmad’s five sons and the twin brother of Ahjam. His elder brother, Asad Ahmad, who was wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, was killed in a police encounter near Jhansi in April 2023. Another brother, Umar, is facing multiple criminal cases, while Ali is also lodged in jail in connection with separate cases.
Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police for a medical examination. The attackers, posing as journalists, opened fire at close range in an incident that was captured live on television and drew nationwide attention. Atiq’s wife, Shaista Parveen, who is also an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, remains absconding, according to police. The latest accident adds another chapter to the family’s long-running legal and criminal history.
