Bihar Records Lowest Muslim Representation Since 1990 with Only 11 MLAs Elected This Election

Date:

As the NDA takes the crown of the Bihar Assembly election with a huge margin, the state saw its lowest Muslim representation since 1990, with only 11 Muslim MLAs entering the house.

In AIMIM, Asaduddin Owaisi managed to get a seat in Seemanchal, winning 5 seats out of his 25 contested seats. Md Tauseef Alam secured the seat with a margin of over 28,726 votes in Bahadurganj. Meanwhile, in RJD, Asif Ahamd won the Bisfi seat, and Sahabuddin claimed the Raghunathpur seat. While in Congress, Mohd Qamrul Hoda and Aaria’s Abidur Rehman secured the seat.

In NDA, Nitish Kumar’s JU(U) set four Muslim candidates, of which only Mohd Zama Khan managed to win, leading the Chainpur in Kaimur district. While in Congress, Mohd Qamrul Hoda and Aaria’s Abidur Rehman secured the seat.

As reported by Money Control, in 2010, the House had 19 Muslim MLAs—7.81% of its strength—with JD(U) sending seven, RJD six, Congress three, LJP two, and the BJP one. The BJP’s sole Muslim winner was Saba Zafar from Amour, who defeated Congress veteran Abdul Jalil Mastan.

The tally improved in 2015, rising to 24 Muslim legislators and nearly 10% representation. RJD accounted for half of them with 12, followed by Congress with six, JD(U) with five, and one from CPI(ML) Liberation.

But by 2020, the count fell back to 19. RJD won eight seats, AIMIM five, Congress four, and BSP and CPI(ML) Liberation one each—bringing representation down again to 7.81%. Strikingly, all 11 Muslim candidates fielded by JD(U) that year ended up losing.
