Muslims Face Identity-Based Abuse in Separate Incidents Across Three States

Date:

Tensions are held high at a housing society that falls on the outskirts of Hyderabad as a managing committee secretary called a resident couple as “Pakistani” during an argument that broke out over an unregistered tenant.

The video shows a man, ostensibly the resident, pointing to his family’s military service as proof of his nationality. The man reveals that his grandfather was a subedar in the Indian Army.

“Don’t call me Pakistani; I am an Indian,” he said.

As reported by Siasat.com, the sequence of the incident started through the dispute. The secretary questioned the tenant identified as Naseema for allowing a couple to live in her flat without informing the housing society management.

It has further been reported that Naseema had also not paid rent for the previous three months. Soon the argument between the two snowballed. In the heat of the argument, the security guard hurled the Pakistani remark, raising questions of the identity.

The incident came to light when its video traveled on social media platforms. The video shows the tenant saying, “Don’t call me Pakistani; I am an Indian.”

Responding to this, the secretary said, “I am just asking, if you are a Pakistani, why are you staying here?”

The altercation does not come to end here. The couple further said that the security accused them of being in India in order to plant bombs.

“This man accused us of being Pakistani; he says we are here to plant bombs. The police are here, but they aren’t doing anything,” the couple said in the video.

The case, however, was resolved, and the secretary apologizes for the remake. Furthermore, he asked the couple to relocate. No case was registered.

On the same day in Odisha, another communal remark incident occurred. A Muslim hawker was the victim of it. A Bajrang Dal worker along with his associates targeted a Mulim hawker and pressured him to chant Jai Shri Ram in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

A Bajrang Dal worker and his associates allegedly harassed a Muslim hawker, taunting and pressuring him to chant Jai Shri Ram in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

This incident also came to light when the video of it travelled on Instagram. A Hindutva worker who was identified as Rahul Mandal was seen harassing a Muslim hawker on a bike and accused him of being a Bangladeshi.

“Say Jai Shri Ram, say it,” one of the Hindustan workers said as seen in the video.

In yet another incident, in Gujarat’s Modasa, a Muslim patient was called a “terrorist.” The incident happened when the patient, having a Muslim name, arrived at the medical store and was met with religiously motivated hatred.
