New Delhi, August 22, 2023 – In preparation for the upcoming G20 Summit, the Delhi government has announced a three-day holiday for all municipal, government, and private offices in the city. Scheduled from September 8th to 10th, this decision aims to streamline operations during the global event and minimize traffic congestion, ensuring a smoother experience for both residents and attendees.

The closure will extend beyond offices, as all markets and banks within the New Delhi police district will also remain shut during the G20 Summit. This move is seen as essential to maintain security and prevent disruptions in the city. Additionally, several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Central Secretariat, may temporarily close for security reasons.

The recommendation to declare a government holiday came from the Delhi Police, who emphasized the significance of the G20 Summit and the extensive logistical preparations required. This decision, once officially approved, will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also contribute to the safety and security of delegates, ultimately enhancing the success of the Summit.

The formal order declaring the public holiday awaits approval from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who is expected to issue a gazette notification in this regard. After this notification, businesses, and commercial establishments in controlled zones, primarily in the New Delhi district, will be requested to remain closed during the specified period.

However, traders and business owners have expressed their desire to keep their shops open during the event. Brijesh Goyal, chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), stated that traders are willing to cooperate with authorities to ensure security while providing guests with a shopping experience.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Public Relations) Suman Nalwa explained that the government’s decision to declare a three-day holiday is part of a comprehensive security and movement plan prepared by the Delhi Police for the G20 Summit. It is intended to facilitate the logistics of this massive global event and ensure the safety and convenience of all involved.

As the final approvals are awaited, Delhi residents and visitors can anticipate a brief but significant pause in the city’s daily activities, allowing for a focused and secure G20 Summit.
