The Election Commission on Tuesday afternoon condemned what it described as “persistent pressure tactics” by “political parties and candidates” attempting to undermine its authority just a day ahead of the Delhi election, the NDTV reports.
In a post on X, the Election Commission acknowledged attempts to undermine its authority but stated it had exercised “restraint, absorbing such outbursts with sagacity and stoicism.” The poll body asserted it would “not be swayed by such insinuations” and emphasized that concerns raised ahead of the Delhi election were thoroughly investigated and addressed by over 1.5 lakh officials operating within a well-established legal framework to ensure a fair electoral process.
The Election Commission’s statement came in response to remarks by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal questioning its independence. Earlier today, Atishi accused the poll body of overlooking violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the family of BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
In a series of posts on X on Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi alleged that BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s family members were seen “roaming” in Kalkaji—her constituency—in violation of the Model Code of Conduct. She claimed to have filed a complaint with Delhi Police but was instead booked herself.
Slamming the Election Commission, Atishi wrote, “Unbelievable! Bidhuri’s family is openly flouting the Model Code, yet no action is taken. I complained to the police and EC, but instead, a case was registered against me.”
Chief Minister Atishi, who is facing a case for allegedly slapping a policeman, has repeatedly raised concerns over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri. Bidhuri, infamous for using communal slurs against then-BSP MP Danish Ali in September 2023, has now been fielded by the BJP to challenge Atishi in Kalkaji.
Last month, Atishi broke down in tears while reacting to Bidhuri’s remarks about her father. The AAP strongly condemned his comments, accusing him of using “filthy language.”
Bidhuri has previously made crude remarks about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, stating that if elected, he would ensure roads were “as smooth as Priyanka Gandhi’s cheek.”
