According to a statement by Senthamarai Kannan, deputy director general of meteorology at RMC, “a trough extends up to middle tropospheric levels from the center of the well-marked low pressure area over east central Arabian sea off  Maharashtra coast to southeast Arabian sea off south Kerala coast.”

Areas Submerged, Roads Jammed, Traffic Emerged in Chennai

On October 15, the capital cities of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Karnataka experienced heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Chennai and its suburbs have been experiencing rain since the previous night, leading to waterlogging in several areas, including Koyambedu, Guindy, Velachery, and Madipakkam. This has caused inconvenience for residents, with many in Velachery compelled to park their vehicles on flyovers to avoid the flooding.

Schools and Colleges Shut Down

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15 due to the meteorological department’s forecast of heavy rainfall.

On October 14, the chief minister reviewed the state’s monsoon preparedness and instructed authorities to issue an advisory permitting IT employees in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts to work from home from October 15 to 18.

990 Water Pumps Deployed

Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation announced the deployment of 990 water pumps, 57 tractors fitted with pump sets, and 36 mechanized boats to address emergency situations. Additionally, approximately 170 fully equipped relief centers are currently operational to assist those affected by the flooding.
