Muslim Youth in Agra Beaten After Being Asked His Religion; Police Deny Communal Angle

Date:

A young Muslim man identified as Anas was brutally assaulted on Tuesday after a man, who was drunk, allegedly asked his name and identified him as Muslim. The incident happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra.

The local media reveals that Anas was on his way to visit his grandmother with his uncle, Fardeen, when he was reportedly stopped by a man identified as Santosh.

According to the police, the dispute erupted between youths from the same neighborhood under the Tajganj police station limits and was “pacified on the spot” by Anas’s uncle, Fardeen. Santosh, however, later returned and assaulted Fardeen after the situation had been defused.

“The police investigation has not confirmed the allegation of assault after asking for his name. Therefore, please do not spread misleading news,” the police said on X.

The Siasat TV further reports that Santosh was drunk when the incident unfolded and it was not a matter of communal anger, and a case has been registered.

However, the victim has alleged that the accused launched the attack only after getting the cognizance of the religious identity of Anas.
