NEET-UG Open For Class 12 Students Who Don’t Have Biology: NMC

If you have passed 10+2 exams with physics, chemistry and mathematics as core subjects, you still have a chance to pursue a medical degree in India or abroad. All you need to do is to clear the biology/biotechnology exam as an additional subject at 10+2 level from any recognised board.

This is the latest guideline issued by National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex regulatory body for medical education in India. According to a public notice by NMC, candidates who have studied physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology and English, even as additional subjects after passing Class XII, will be eligible to appear in NEET-UG test, the national entrance exam for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India.

Such candidates will also get an eligibility certificate from NMC, which is a legal proof that they can study undergraduate medical courses abroad.

The new guideline is a departure from the previous rule, which required candidates to have two years of regular/continuous/coterminous study of physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology in Class XI and XII with practicals, along with English.

The previous rule also did not allow candidates to study biology/biotechnology or any other requisite subject as an additional subject after passing Class XII. The previous rule also required candidates to complete the two years’ study from a regular school and not from any open school or as a ‘private’ candidate.

NMC said that it decided to relax the criteria for appearing for NEET-UG and granting eligibility certificate for studying medicine abroad after deliberating on the issue on June 14. NMC said that the new guideline was in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), which permitted a great extent of flexibility in the study of various subjects in Class XII.
