In recent political developments in Bihar, there are growing speculations that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar might switch sides once again and rejoin the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This comes after his earlier departure from the Mahagathbandhan, a Grand Alliance led by Lalu Yadav’s RJD, Nitish’s JDU, and the Congress party. Kumar had initially joined the Grand Alliance after parting ways with the BJP in 2022.

Amid the uncertainty, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the situation, stating that those committed to saving democracy would remain steadfast. Kharge mentioned that he would provide more information upon reaching Delhi and emphasised the importance of authentic information amid swirling rumors. As disclosed by Jairam Ramesh, the Congress has tried to speak to Kumar about the ongoing rumors.

The recent rumours gained traction when Nitish Kumar took a dig at the Congress-led UPA government, expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in awarding Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, to the state’s socialist leader and former chief minister, Karpoori Thakur. The political rift seemed to deepen further as sources reported that Kumar declined to join Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, scheduled to enter the state on January 30.

Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav’s absence from Republic Day celebrations, where Nitish Kumar was present, hinted at strained relations within the ruling alliance. The Janata Dal United (JDU) has called for clarification from Kumar regarding reported talks with the BJP about rejoining the NDA.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav suggested that Nitish Kumar could become the prime minister if he remains with the India bloc of the opposition. Kumar’s comments on dynasty politics added tension within the alliance, prompting reactions from Lalu Yadav’s daughter.

First Mamta, now Kumar

After Mamata Banerjee cracked the deal with the Congress on the INDIA bloc, Nitish Kumar has also expressed his dissatisfaction over the unfolding events in the INDIA coalition and delayed appointments, irrespective of being the main driver behind the formation of the INDIA bloc.

In a statement made on Saturday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his disagreement with the recent decision by the INDIA bloc to boycott shows and events hosted by 14 journalists and news anchors. Emphasising his support for journalists, Kumar stated, “I am not against any journalist, and it is wrong to boycott.”

When asked about his reaction to the INDIA bloc’s move, Nitish Kumar questioned the need for such a boycott, saying, “Why should I boycott? I am in favour of journalists.” He further emphasised the importance of granting full freedom to journalists, allowing them to express their views without constraints.

Kumar reflected on the role of journalists and the significance of their independence, stating, “When journalists have complete freedom, they can write what they deem proper and fitting. Can journalists be kept under control? Did I ever impose any control on journalists? Journalists have the right to express their thoughts. I am not against anyone. It is wrong to boycott.”
