611 Rajasthan Schools Lack Buildings: Govt Blames Gehlot as CJP Intensifies ‘Checks’

Date:

The state government has informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday that as many as 611 government schools in Rajasthan are functioning without their own buildings.  The BJP government has said that the infrastructure gap is attributed to the previous Congress-led Ashok Gehlot government.

The BJP said an audit following the Jhalawar school accident had highlighted the poor condition of government schools. It blamed the Gehlot government for the situation and said the current administration was trying to improve it.

The disclosure came in light of the response to a question from Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tika Ram Jully. UDISE data for 2025–26, cited by India Today, it shows that 611 government schools in the state do not have school buildings.

The data comes after co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and a team of the Cockroach Janata Party were attacked on their way to inspect a government school in Bagru, Jaipur.

One of the reasons for the CJP team’s visit to school was to scrutinize the allegations that the school was functioning from a cowshed, as the original building of the school was closed last year on declaration of being unsafe, and students were shifted to a temporary compound.

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said to IANS “We will not say anything; we will only conduct school visits. You can do whatever you want. We are not afraid of your nonsense. We will get our schools repaired; you can do whatever you want. Look, we are seeking accountability from the government. The question should not be what CJP will do in 48 hours; the question should be when the government will repair these schools. When will the 600 schools that are running without buildings be repaired? When will the 85,000 classrooms that are in poor condition be repaired? You should ask these questions to the government”

It has further been reported that out of 64,484 government schools that have their own buildings, 2,047 of them do not have their own toilet facilities, and 1,049 lack drinking water.

It has further revealed that the maximum number of schools without toilets was Banswara, the number being 188. Following this, Dungarpur has 124, and Udaipur has 98. Meanwhile, Dausa has the highest number of schools without drinking water facilities, the number being 98.

Notably, the Rajasthan government has said that it has allocated 550 crore for the repair and renovation of schools, and 450 crore has been allocated for the construction of buildings for those who are running with dilapidated structures. Additionally, 2,500 crore annually, or 12,500 crore over five years, would be available for construction, repair, and maintenance of school buildings.
