Two persons including CP (M) leader Kalatan Dasgupta were reportedly arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to attack the junior doctors outside the Sawashtya Bhawan at Salt Lake in Kolkata. Two were reportedly protesting against the Kolkata rape and murder doctor.
The twist in the case came a day after Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh released an audio clip of a phone call. He alleged that a political conspiracy has been hatched to attack the protesting doctors to defame the Mamata Banerjee government in the state.
Dasgupta was reportedly arrested from the protest site outside Swasthya Bhawan in Sector 5. The other accused, as reported by the PTI, has been identified as Sanjiv Das, was arrested from Haltu in South Kolkata on Friday night. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police has also lodged a suo motu case in connection with the audio clip.
In the clip, one man could be heard telling the other that he had received instructions from “Saheb” to attack the protest venue. To this, the other man motivates him to do it. The conversation further continues by the first man saying that while he had been doing such things for years, his conscience is not allowing him to attack them as they are doctors.
As reported by The Times of India, the second man can be purportedly heard trying to convince the first man saying he does not need to “finish” them but only “attack them”,
Later in the clip, the first man mentions that someone named “Bappada” instructed him to carry out the attack and put the blame on the TMC.
After sharing the audio clip, Kunal Ghosh claimed that the party had “credible information” suggesting that some Left and ultra-Left groups were planning to infiltrate the protesters and carry out the attack to tarnish the image of the TMC and the Mamata Banerjee government.
Following the release of the audio clip, several CCTV cameras were installed at more than 12 locations at the protest site, and the number of police officers stationed there increased from 250 to around 500, according to a report by TOI.
Doctor Protest
The medics have been protesting outside Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state health department, since Tuesday, demanding better security at state-run hospitals and the removal of top officials in connection with a rape and murder case.
Despite heavy rainfall, the junior doctors continued their sit-in demonstration for the fifth straight day on Saturday.
The doctors have expressed their willingness to engage in discussions with a competent authority to resolve the ongoing stalemate.
