Two unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur Wednesday night. Security forces noticed suspicious movement in the Majalta area in the late hours of Wednesday evening, the officers said. A joint team of the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir police conducted a cordon and search operation, and following this, the unidentified militants opened fire.
“In a joint intelligence-based operation during the intervening night of 16/17 September, confirmed inputs indicated the presence of terrorists in the general area of Brattal, Udhampur,” the Indian Army’s Jammu-based White Knight Corps said and the Indian Express reported.
“Despite hostile weather, difficult terrain, and poor visibility, troops of the White Knight Corps, Jammu Kashmir Police, and CRPF launched a targeted counter-terrorism operation resulting in the neutralization of two terrorists,” it added.
According to officials, additional reinforcements have been rushed to the area, and combing operations have been expanded.
“The operation is still in progress, with search and surveillance operations continuing in the area. Security forces remain deployed to trace and neutralize any remaining threat,” White Knight Corp said, the Indian Express further reported.
Officers said that while the cordon around the area was strengthened, the joint team of forces launched a massive combing operation to check if more militants were present in the area following the gunfight.
As highlighted by the Deccan Herald, security officials and analysts have attributed part of the shift to the redeployment of troops to the China border following the 2020 Galwan clash and the subsequent military standoff in eastern Ladakh.
It further reported that the ACLED data showed that more than 60% of militant violence recorded in the Union Territory in 2025 occurred in the Jammu division, compared with just 5% in 2018. The shift has been accompanied by additional security deployments and intensified area-domination operations across the Jammu-Kathua-Udhampur-Doda belt.v
