A 22-year-old Muslim youth identified as Salman was beaten to death on Thursday in Delhi’s Nand Nagri area on the night of Diwali while recording a short video near the Gangan Cinema flyover.
The sequence of the incident, which ultimately cost Salman’s life, started with an argument between two groups that turned violent. The group reportedly smashed Salman’s head repeatedly against the flyover railing. Salman sustained severe injuries and was rushed to GTB hospital, and two days later he succumbed to his injuries, creating unrest and fear in the local Muslim community.
“My brother went out to make a short video with his friends. Later, we got a call saying he was lying on the road, covered in blood. When we reached there, he was unconscious,” Salman’s brother, Anan, said, talking to reporters.
“Those boys beat him mercilessly. His friends are giving conflicting statements, which makes us think they know more than they are saying,” he added.
“On Tuesday, we received information that during a fight on the Nand Nagri flyover, a man had sustained severe head injuries. The complainant, 26-year-old Sohail Mohammad, reported that while making a reel on the flyover, a scuffle broke out between two groups, during which his friend Salman sustained injuries. Salman was immediately taken to GTB Hospital in an unconscious state. A case was lodged under Section 110 of the BNS (attempt to commit culpable homicide),” DCP (Northeast) Ashish Mishra said.
“On Thursday, we received information from GTB Hospital that Salman had succumbed to his injuries. The post-mortem report of the deceased is awaited. Teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the crime. Further investigation is on,” he added.
