Members of Banjrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad entered the house of a muslim in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district where a child was learning Arabic for Quranic purposes and alleged that a madrasa was being illegally operated.
The workers further asked the teacher of the child about reading the Arabic letters. They also asked about the building’s ownership. The teacher said that the Friday prayers are organised in the house occasionally which is followed by Arabic lessons for some children.
Meanwhile, the Hindutva leader said, “We are explaining this to you politely; what you are doing is not right. Just wait and see.”
Furthermore, the Hindutva workers raised questions over a prayer timetable which was written in Arabic. They further intimated the teacher and eventually submitted a memorandum to the local police station. The memorandum demanded the closure of it.
“This is a very problematic matter because it is near the border and due to the changing demographics in the area. We are examining the issue from that angle and proceeding accordingly. At the same time, Devbhoomi should be respected. This operation should be stopped immediately,” one of the workers said.
Meanwhile, Kotwali Inspector Devendra Rawat made it clear that an investigation is underway and Tehsildar Mahendra Singh said that actions would be taken based on the regulations.
The incident comes after the Uttarakhand government officially replaced the state’s Madrasa Board with Uttrakhand State Minority Education Authority.
“The Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority (USMEA) came into effect on July 1, 2026, following the dissolution of the Madrasa Board,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said at a function in Dehradun.
“We aim to strike a balance between faith and modernity,” he said.
With this, educational institutions which are run by Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis will come under one common recognition and regulatory system.
