As many as 306 persons have been killed and 49 are missing in Manipur since the beginning of the ethnic violence in the state, which started in May 2023, PTI reported.
The data was provided by the State Home Minister, Govindas Konthoujam. The data has the details till August 31 and was provided in response to the questions raised in the House. He stated that the conflict had also caused widespread displacement and hindrance in normal life across the state. And at least 18 Kuki-Zos and 12 Naga civilians have been killed during this period.
The conflicts occurred between the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zos and the increase of hostilities between the Nagas and Kuki-Zos.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said in the Assembly that 36,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) had been resettled, while around 24,000 others remained displaced after being forced from their homes during the crisis that began on May 3, 2023.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, responding to a short-duration discussion moved by Congress MLA Th. Lokeshwar Singh in the Assembly said 24,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) continued to reside in relief camps across Manipur following their displacement in May 2023.
He said the state had so far resettled 36,000 IDPs, attributing the progress to the collective support and efforts of legislators.
He said that he had last month called representatives of as many as six joint associations of IDPs for discussion on the issue to take out ways to extend assistance and facilitate their resettlement.
“The prolonged crisis has also caused mental trauma among the affected people. In this regard, the health department is taking steps to help lessen the trauma being faced by them,” the Chief Minister said.
He said that he also brought up the matter with the planning department to take out steps and initiative for the relief and livelihood support, the Telegraph online reported.
On Thursday, he told the Assembly that 60,000 persons were displaced in the violence. He described the violence as an “unprecedented crisis,” the Telegraph online reported. 36,000 had been internally displaced and had been resettled, and 24,000 are in relief camps, the Scroll reported.
