Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s Remarks on Brahmins as “Bearers of Knowledge” Draw Criticism

Date:

Delhi Chief Minister Rekhta Gupta sparked controversy after remarking that Brahmins “ignite the flame of knowledge in society” and that the government should prioritise the community’s welfare.

Speaking at the All India Brahmin Conference organised by the Shri Brahmin Sabha in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura on Sunday, Gupta said that Brahmins are custodians of both “scriptures and weapons,” highlighting their dual role in preserving wisdom and strength.

Addressing the All India Brahmin Conference organised by Shri Brahmin Sabha in northwest Delhi’s Pitampura on Sunday, Gupta said Brahmins not only worship scriptures but also weapons.

“If anyone is igniting the flame of knowledge in society, it is our Brahmin community. They worship not only scriptures but also weapons. Only through weapons and scriptures can we protect society and the country today. By igniting the flame of knowledge, propagating religion, and fostering a spirit of goodwill, the Brahmin community has always worked for the benefit of society,” she said.

No matter which government is in power, it should work for the welfare of the Brahmin community to move them forward,” she added.

Emphasising that Delhi has been grappling with a “huge backlog of issues” for nearly three decades, Gupta urged members of the Brahmin community to share their suggestions on ways to keep the national capital functioning smoothly.

“Please continue to offer your suggestions on how we can further our cause in Delhi, as there is a huge backlog in Delhi. For 27 years, Delhi has been moving at a slow pace. Now is the time to shift gears and accelerate the process. It seems that the surrounding states have surpassed us. If we all work together in the interest of Delhi and its people, then Delhi will surely be established as a Viksit Delhi (developed Delhi),” she further said.

The remarks were made amid a significant political transition in Delhi, as the BJP returned to power in the capital after 27 years, bringing an end to the AAP’s decade-long governance.

Reacting to Gupta’s remarks, AAP leader Sanjeev Jha expressed shock, saying he was “astonished” by her statement, which he claimed insulted public sentiments.
