“A last opportunity is granted to file the status report within four weeks. It is made clear that if the status report is not filed, the matter will be decided on the basis of material available on record,” the court said.
The five petitioners, who completed their schooling at the Institution for the Blind in Lajpat Nagar and stayed in its hostel, later enrolled in graduation courses at Delhi University. Their plea stated that they were asked to vacate the hostel after finishing school.
Represented by advocates Rahul Bajaj and Amar Jain, the petitioners argued that the Delhi government’s Department of Social Welfare was responsible for providing them with alternative accommodation.
Citing a court judgment, the counsel argued that since the petitioners were pursuing higher education at Delhi University, the institution was obligated to provide them accommodation.
The plea highlighted the lack of hostel facilities for Delhi University students pursuing graduation, particularly for persons with disabilities, under the Social Welfare Department.
