A 70-year-old mentally challenged and visually impaired woman was allegedly assaulted in and was attempted to be raped in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area. The CCTV footage of the incident also shows that the accused attempted to sexually assault her by hitting her with a brick.
The incident came to light after a local resident found the woman’s body lying in a pool of blood near her house. The police were alerted, and a complaint was subsequently lodged in connection with the incident. The mentally challenged victim would frequently ask people for money while roaming around the Block 27 area of Trilokpuri.
“At approximately 5:30 a.m., when I came outside, I observed a woman lying on the road unclothed. I immediately went inside, brought some of my wife’s clothing, and handed it to a female sanitation worker, who then helped cover and dress the woman,” local resident Raees told FoEJ Media.
“After that, I called the police, and then the police and an ambulance arrived,” he added.
“A large crowd had gathered at the scene; however, no one was stepping forward to assist her,” he said.
“She was covered in blood, and her face was severely swollen, making her difficult to recognize. She was lying unconscious and unclothed,” another resident said.
“If the accused had been a Muslim boy, people would be saying that his house would have been bulldozed and he would have faced an encounter,” a resident said with anger in the voice.
The brutal incident reportedly occurred on the night of 12 June. A man allegedly approached the woman while she was resting outside a shop where she was attacked with a brick, leaving her seriously injured.
“She was in such a severe condition that we believed she would not make it alive,” a resident said.The victim’s medical report revealed physical assault, with the woman having swelling and marks on her face. Initially, investigators cited charges related to sexual assault and molestation during the initial stages of the investigation. However, the reports did not indicate rape.
Meantime, police sources said that the accused allegedly attempted to assault the woman sexually before fleeing the spot.
A 28-year-old man, identified as Vishnu alias Vicky, has been arrested in connection with the case. According to the Delhi Police, he was heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest and is allegedly addicted to drugs.
The crime and forensic science laboratory (FSL) teams were also called to inspect the scene and collect evidence along with extensive local inquiries by the police in the area.
According to the reports, the victim is conscious but not in the position to give a statement due to her intellectual disability.
According to the medical examination and evidence, it is a case under section 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
