Coupled with severe naval blockades that choked traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz, European consumers already wrestling with inflation suddenly found themselves hit by a staggering fuel shock at the pump.
The soaring cost of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) fuels quickly altered consumer math. With gas prices so high that they are pushing car buyers to electric alternatives in droves, EV sales have been up noticeably on the continent. This sudden spike in demand gave immediate momentum to Europe’s green transition, complementing strict European Union fleet emissions rules, ongoing charging grid expansions, and the timely arrival of more affordable electric models.
Yet, industry experts and automakers warn that this sudden wave of momentum is built on a highly volatile foundation, and its long-term future remains deeply unpredictable.
The primary threat to this boom is that its main economic driver, prohibitively expensive oil is already starting to dissolve. A major breakthrough occurred as the United States and Iran finalized a preliminary peace agreement framework brokered by Pakistan.

Europe’s acute digital vulnerabilities have been underscored by Washington’s recent national security restrictions on advanced foundational AI models, which led to Anthropic completely blocking foreign access to its latest tools.
Because next-generation European automated driving systems and software-defined vehicle architectures depend heavily on Silicon Valley’s infrastructure, manufacturers are deeply worried that transatlantic friction could disrupt their digital supply chains.
Simultaneously, a bitter diplomatic dispute over battery raw materials has brought manufacturing negotiations to a total standstill. The Trump administration’s early-2026 initiative to establish a Western critical minerals trading bloc enforcing government-mandated price floors calculated by a U.S. military AI tool has deeply fractured both the G7 and the automotive industry. While mining corporations support the guaranteed profits, automakers strongly oppose the plan, fearing it will permanently inflate battery production costs and render European EVs far too expensive to compete on the global stage.
What began as a geopolitical shock driving consumers toward a greener future has now hit its own geopolitical wall. Without a reliable mineral supply chain, stable digital infrastructure, or sustained economic pressure at the pump, Europe’s electric momentum remains highly fragile.
