As many as five people have been killed in political unrest after the BJP won the state election in West Bengal. The BJP has won the first-ever victory in West Bengal, which is home to as many as 100 million people. The party has secured 206 seats out of 294 assembly seats. The results show.
Before this, West Bengal was ruled by Mamata Banerjee as the chief minister since 2011. Banerjee, however, has rejected the results and has alleged malpractices in the election. Banerjee labeled the BJP’s win as “an immoral victory” and claimed that more than “100 seats were looted by the BJP.”
However, according to the Indian constitution, the state governor can demand Banerjee’s resignation or wait for the term to expire, following which newly elected politicians will be sworn in.
As per the reports, the clashes between rival party supporters occurred in the state capital, Kolkata, and other regions of West Bengal districts after the results were announced.
“Two of our workers were killed after results of the elections were announced on Monday,” BJP state leader Samik Bhattacharya told the AFP news agency.
Meanwhile, taking to the social media platform, TMC in a statement reported the “brutal murder” of two party workers. Furthermore, Kolkata police said that a law and order situation occurred on Tuesday in parts of the Topsia and Tiljala areas, where public properties were vandalized.
The BJP, however, said that two of its workers were killed in New Town in North 24 Parganas and Udaynarayanpur in Howrah. The two deceased were identified as Madhu Mondal and Yadav Bor Jadhav Bor. They were allegedly attacked with sharp weapons while coming back from BJP victory celebrations.
Ahead of the violence, the Election Commission of India ordered West Bengal authorities to adopt “zero tolerance” toward post-poll violence and directed security agencies to prevent clashes related to the election outcome.
