Gujarat Police earlier this month, tied an accused Muslim man to the bonnet of a police vehicle and beat him with sticks days after three persons were arrested for allegedly slaughtering cows in Ahmedabad’s Vejalpur area. The incident came to light after the video of it went viral on the internet on Thursday.
The clip shows the muslim man crying and pleading for help, saying “Ya Allah, bachalo” (Oh Allah save me) as officers beat him.
The emergence of the footage comes days after police arrested three persons in connection with alleged cow slaughter near a housing society in Vejalpur. According to local reports, as many as nine individuals have been booked in the case so far.
Police said the operation was launched on Tuesday morning after officials received specific information about alleged illegal slaughter activities taking place in an open field. Upon reaching the site, officers allegedly found a group of people behind bushes engaged in slaughtering cows. Several individuals reportedly fled from the spot during the raid, while three were apprehended.
During the operation, authorities claimed to have seized around 520 kilograms of meat valued at approximately Rs 1.56 lakh, along with a live calf, knives, an autorickshaw, a car without a registration plate, and a mobile phone.
An FIR has been lodged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Gujarat has some of the country’s strictest anti-cow slaughter laws, under which the alleged offence attracts severe penalties.
