The leader of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), K. Kavitha, was taken to Tihar Jail, as reported by PTI. The Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced BRS leader K Kavitha to judicial custody until April 9 in a money laundering case involving the Delhi excise policy.
She was reportedly housed in jail number six, which is reserved for female convicts, together with two other female inmates within Tihar jail.
“She has reached Tihar Jail and will be lodged in jail number 6, which is the women’s jail. Her medical examination will be conducted,” an official said.
Kavitha was sent to the ED’s custody for seven days on March 16. A Delhi court decided to detain Kavitha in judicial custody until April 9, citing the Enforcement Directorate’s fears that her release may result in witness tampering or evidence manipulation because of her alleged influence.
“She dined on dal and rice, the same as the other inmates, on Tuesday night, and had tea with snacks Wednesday morning,” a jail source mentioned.
“Following her medical examinations, she was directly sent to her cell. Her blood pressure was slightly low during the medical checkup, but later it went back to normal,” the source said.
The source also confirmed the fact that Kavitha was provided with the normal items required by jail rules, such as a blanket, clothes, bedding, a mattress, and slippers, in addition to her prescription drugs.
According to officials, Kavitha hadn’t made any explicit requests and would get her basic needs in compliance with court directives and jail procedures.
Kavitha is entitled to home-cooked meals, books, writing supplies, bedding, mattresses, slippers, clothes, and medications, as per the court’s orders. She is also free to wear jewellery, even though the official stated that she didn’t have any when she arrived at the institution.
““The timings for tea, food, and watching television will be the same for her as for other inmates”,” another officer noted, adding that she can utilise the Tihar jail library, accessible to all detainees.
The 46-year-old BRS leader was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate on March 15 in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case and was under the agency’s custody for 10 days. Approximately 500 female inmates are housed in jail number six within the Tihar prison complex.
Kavitha becomes the third political figure, following Aam Aadmi Party members Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, to be detained in Tihar jail due to his involvement in the excise policy case. Sisodia is held in jail number one, while Singh is housed in jail number two. Another AAP leader, Satyendar Jain, arrested in a separate money laundering case, is lodged in jail number seven.
