Tension flared in Udham Singh Nagar amid the Udham Singh Nagar biryani controversy after a customer alleged he received chicken biryani from a Muslim-owned eatery despite ordering from a restaurant listed under a Hindu name on Zomato.
Ravi Chandra booked an order from “Saurabh Chicken Biryani,” assuming it was Hindu-owned.
As per the FIR accessed by Siasat.com, suspicion grew when the listing showed a location near Trishul Chowk, an area described as Muslim-dominated, “with no Hindu restaurant visible.”
Ravi informed his friends — Vicky, Raghav, Pradeep Mehta, and Aditya Pandey — who advised him to verify the location.
The group waited in their car near the area and tracked the delivery rider to an “Indian restaurant.”
“Having caught him red-handed picking up our order from ‘Indian Restaurant’ near Trishul Chowk in front of the State Bank, and after verifying the live location with our own eyes, we got out of the car and went into Indian Restaurant,” Ravi said.
Situation Escalates at Eatery
The situation escalated after the restaurant owner introduced himself as Rashid. Ravi, his friends, and a group of cow vigilantes confronted him, and reports mention sticks at the scene.
A crowd gathered quickly, and videos circulating online show police trying to control the situation.
“Isne bohot galath kiya, bohot galath kiya hai (This was very wrong of him, very wrong),” a person shouted as police removed individuals from the spot.
Case Registered, Probe Underway
Police intervened and took all parties to the station. Ravi later filed a formal complaint.
He alleged that Rashid used the name “Saurabh Chicken Biryani” online to mislead customers and hide the restaurant’s identity.
“By doing so, he is hurting the sentiments of the Hindu religion and committing fraud against people,” he stated in the FIR.
He urged police to take strict action to maintain peace in the area.
Circle Inspector Prashant Kumar confirmed a case under Section 318(2) for cheating.
Officials also named “Saurabh,” who allegedly supplied food items that Rashid sold under a different listing.
Investigators continue to probe the reason behind using different names for the same food outlet.
