Russia launched more than 650 drones and missiles on Ukraine on Saturday, intensifying the aerial dimension of the ongoing war and causing widespread destruction across multiple regions. Ukrainian air defense systems responded swiftly, intercepting the majority of incoming threats, according to official reports.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed that air defense forces detected a total of 666 drones and missiles during the large-scale attack. Ukrainian forces successfully shot down 610 of these targets, significantly limiting the potential damage. However, several strikes still hit critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
Dnipro Among Hardest Hit in Russia’s Drone and Missile Attack
The eastern city of Dnipro emerged as the primary target of the assault. A residential building suffered partial destruction, and emergency services continue search and rescue operations amid fears that people remain trapped under the rubble.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reported at least five fatalities and more than 30 injuries. The strikes primarily affected civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, energy facilities, and businesses, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact of the attack.
Strikes Hit Multiple Ukrainian Regions
The coordinated assault impacted several key regions, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Odesa, and Kyiv. Authorities reported damage to essential infrastructure, underscoring the continued vulnerability of urban centers to aerial attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, stating that Russia continues to rely on a combination of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles aimed largely at civilian targets. He emphasized that such attacks demonstrate the urgent need for stronger international action.
Ukraine Calls for Stronger Sanctions Against Russia
Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s international partners, particularly the European Union, to adopt a robust new sanctions package. He called for a “21st sanctions package” that would significantly weaken Russia’s capacity to sustain its military operations.
According to Zelenskyy, each large-scale attack reinforces the necessity for decisive global intervention to curb ongoing aggression and protect civilian populations.
Russia Claims Interception of Ukrainian Drones
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported its own defensive success, claiming that it intercepted and destroyed 127 Ukrainian drones. The reported interceptions occurred across multiple regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, and Rostov, as well as areas around the Black Sea and Crimea.
Ongoing Aerial Warfare Intensifies Conflict
The conflicting claims from both Ukraine and Russia highlight the escalating use of drones and missiles in the conflict. Both sides continue to emphasize their defensive capabilities while acknowledging the scale and frequency of aerial engagements.
