Who is Rekha Gupta, and Why BJP Picked her Delhi CM

Date:

Rekha Guptav, a first time BJP MLA from Shalimar Bagh is all set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi today. This makes a historic day for the party as it returns to power in the national capital after 27 years. Rekha Guptav will be the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi.

The 50 year old politician secured the Shalimar Bagh seat in the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections with over 29,000 votes, defeating her Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opponent Bandana Kumari. Her campaign slogan, “Kaam hi Pehchaan” (my work is my identity), is prominently featured on her website.

Why Rekha Gupta?

Although Gupta is a first-time MLA, she is no stranger to politics. Her significant experience in student politics—where the DUSU elections are often considered a stepping stone to national-level politics—as well as her tenure as a councillor, likely contributed to her selection.

By appointing Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s Chief Minister, the BJP aims to build on the legacy of women leaders in the role, positioning her leadership as a contrast to and a break from AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure.

The other reason could be, Rekha Gupta won from Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, a constituency predominantly consisting of middle class residents. The constituency represents a key demographic that has long been a strong support base for the BJP.  Her leadership is also considered as a strategic move to make the party’s connection with this group stronger.

Who will attend the meeting?

The oath ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top BJP leaders. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi have also been invited.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, a crucial meeting of the NDA alliance will take place, with Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other Union Ministers in attendance.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP President JP Nadda will also attend  the swearing-in ceremony.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu are also present among other key leaders.
