The accused in the alleged gangrape of a minor in Assam’s Nagaon district reportedly died in police custody on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday after he reportedly “tried to escape by jumping into a pond.”

As per the reports of The Indian Express, Tafazul Islam (24) was one of the three accused and was the only one arrested so far. Islam was charged under sections of Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and the POCSO Act. The police said that he had been taken to the crime scene late in the night when he attempted to escape and jump into a lake in the area.

Assam: Prime Accused of the Dhing Rape case, Tafazzul Islam found dead in a pond, where he jumped while trying to escape the police’s custody.

“After he was interrogated, he was taken to the crime scene. It is there that he tried to escape and jumped into a lake. We cordoned the area immediately and called the SDRF. After the SDRF searched, they recovered the dead body. Our constable, who was holding his handcuffs, has got some injury in his hand and has been sent for treatment,” Nagaon SP said.

The Case:

A 14 year old girl was allegedly gang raped on the evening of 22 August in Assam’s Nagaon district. According to the details of the case, the victim, a class 10 student, was returning home from her tuition on her bicycle when she was allegedly attacked by three men on motorcycles.

The prime suspect, identified as Tafazul Islam, was arrested shortly after the incident. However, during a police recreation of the crime scene, he attempted to escape by jumping into a pond and drowned. His body was recovered by police after a search operation lasting nearly two hours.

This incident has sparked significant outrage in the community, leading to protests demanding strict punishment for the perpetrators. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, assured the public that the government would take stringent action against those involved in the case. The police are actively searching for the remaining two suspects linked to this crime.
