The Uttar Pradesh Government said Noida protest violence involved “external elements,” adding that 45 of the 66 people arrested in connection with the protest are not workers.
The Noida unrest turned violent on Monday when thousands of workers staged demonstrations demanding higher wages and improved benefits. The protest quickly escalated into clashes, leading to arson, vandalism, and stone pelting. The government described the incident as a “well-planned conspiracy” aimed at creating turmoil and disorder under the pretext of a labour movement.
Arrests and Role of Non-Workers
The government said authorities identified 17 individuals in arson cases and arrested 11 of them, of whom eight are not workers. Officials also identified 32 individuals for incitement and have arrested 19 so far. In addition, police apprehended 34 people who are not workers for their alleged participation in the protest. Authorities also arrested four individuals in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the unrest.
The government said women from different states actively participated in the protest and assisted those involved in violent activities. Officials added that factories continue to function normally and said both workers and industry stakeholders are cooperating with authorities.
Officials said unidentified individuals added workers to multiple WhatsApp groups late on Sunday using QR codes, allowing messages to spread rapidly across labour networks. Several groups, including one titled Workers’ Movement, circulated content that authorities described as inflammatory and aimed at escalating tensions.
The government said investigators are examining possible links between the accused and organisations such as Mazdoor Bigul, along with alleged “urban Naxal” networks.
Yogi Adityanath Orders Strict Action
During a late-night virtual review, Yogi Adityanath directed senior officials to take strict action against those spreading rumours and misinformation. He also called for intensified monitoring of social media platforms to curb provocative content and ensure prompt enforcement on the ground.
Reaffirming its “zero tolerance” stance, the government said it will act firmly against any attempt to disrupt law and order and warned that those involved in the incident will face strict action.
