A mob attack vandalized an Assam Rifles camp and set ablaze three vehicles of security personnel in Manipur’s Senapati district, following a search operation that occurred in the area.
The violence, as said by the officials, unfolded at the district town camp of the paramilitary force on Tuesday when the mob attacked the barrack.
The Assam Rifles, as per the Defense PRO, launched a patrol and search operation after learning reliable information about the presence of armed cadres near Makuilongdi, which is 2 km west of the designated NSCN (IM) camp at Oklong. The search operation was carried out to secure the area and check for any militant activity.
“Intelligence reports and the social media posts indicated the presence of armed cadres moving outside designated camps, carrying weapons and wearing uniforms, in apparent violation of established Ceasefire Ground Rules,” the official said.
At the time of operation, the Assam Rifles columns approached Makuilondgi and Oklong villages, where the residents, including women, hindered them. Following this, the tension emerged, and at around 9 pm, a large crowd gathered in Senapti town and was ready to march towards the Assam Rifles camp, the officials said.
According to the statement, after this a large mob reached the camp, which is located at Naga Taphou, at around 9:30 PM, vandalized property, and attempted to set it ablaze.
“One light vehicle was set ablaze, while two trucks were overturned and damaged, and a car of a civilian was also burnt during the violence,” an official said.
Force was deployed to disperse the violent crowd and stop further violence. Meanwhile, Senapati Police and CRPF were deployed to help security personnel control the tension.
