The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to allow urgent listing of a petition to raise the issue of the Delhi police’s attack on students protesting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital during the protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET exam paper leak.
However, when the issue was highlighted by the lawyers, saying that the videos of police cracking down on students are present, the CJI said, “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch.”
The protest of CJP aiming to march towards parliament on Monday saw thousands of protesters demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the alleged paper leak in the NEET-UG exam. Soon the protest turned violent as Delhi Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to several injuries, including policemen. A young woman was severely injured and was reported to be on ventilator support at RML Hospital.
The lawyer, furthermore, said that the CJI students were asking legitimate issues about the alleged NEET paper leak. The bench said, “Thank you very much.”
This came following the Delhi High Court declining to hear a similar plea on the police action, where the court reportedly told petitioners not to “drag” it into the matter, Siasat TV reports.
The protest took place in light of the alleged NEET paper leak, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest led by CJP asked permission for the peaceful sit-in in advance.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20 demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over repeated NEET-UG paper leaks and irregularities. The group sought Delhi Police permission for the sit-in in advance and said it would remain peaceful.
On July 20, the protestors aimed to march towards the parliament at the start of the monsoon session. However, soon the protest turned violent as the police cracked down on students making rounds on the internet.
