Ukraine and Latvia Sign Strategic Drone Deal as Russia Rejects European Mediation

Date:

Ukraine and Latvia have officially signed a major drone defence cooperation agreement, solidifying joint military production as the Kremlin dismisses Europe’s current readiness to mediate end to the four year long war.

The agreement was signed by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and Latvian Prime Minister Andri Kulbergs on the sidelines of the Nordic Baltic cooperation (NB8) summit in Tallinn, Estonia. The deal establishes Latvia as the sixth country to formally join Kyiv’s specialized drone cooperation initiative, which now sees interest from nearly 20 international partners.

According to Ukrainian and Latvian officials, the framework focuses heavily on reciprocal defense capabilities, integrating Kyiv’s firsthand technological solutions and training from frontline Ukrainian operators directly into Latvia’s military framework.

“These are concrete things to strengthen our joint defense and co-production,” President Zelenskyy stated following the meeting. “Crucially, this also means Ukraine’s expertise and expertise helping to strengthen our partners.”

Prime Minister Kulbergs confirmed that the agreement foresees the immediate arrival of Ukrainian anti-drone combat experts in Latvia. The primary objective is to absorb Ukraine’s battlefield proven technological breakthroughs, while simultaneously expanding joint production across both the Latvian and Ukrainian military industrial sectors.

The Kremlin Rejects European Mediation
The intense Baltic-Ukrainian military alignment stands in the stark contrast to the shifting diplomatic landscape in Moscow. Hours after the drone deal was finalized, the Kremlin formally pushed back against a recent diplomatic push by major European powers.

Kremlin officials stated that Europe is “likely far from ready” to step in as a mediator in the Ukraine peace process. The statement comes directly on the information of the high level meeting in London where the “E3” alliance comprising British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, publicly backed Zelensky’s proposal for ceasefire using the current line on contact as a starting point.

While European leaders have expressed a willingness to actively pave the road toward a negotiated settlement, Moscow has downplayed their neutrality. Russian officials noted that the United States had previously been leading primary peace talks before shifting its geopolitical focus toward the escalating conflict involving Iran, leaving a diplomatic vacuums that European intermediaries are eager, but allegedly unequipped, to fill.
