57 People Suspected to Be Bangladeshi Nationals Detained in Assam

Date:

As many as fifty-seven people, all of them being suspected Bangladeshi, have been detained by the Railway Protection Force, or RPF, at Guwahati’s Kamakhya railway station. The flock of people was caught from the Brahmaputra Mail train at Maligaon Kamakhya Railway station, and as suspected by the RPF, they had fled from Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar, the NDTV reported.

Earlier this week, at least 17 Bangladeshi nationals, allegedly making illegal entry to India, were arrested in Guwahati, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Kulendra Nath Deka said on Wednesday. Furthermore, addressing the media, DCP Deka said that five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested on Tuesday. They were arrested from the general coach of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express in a routine check near the Paltan Bazar railway station.  The police, as reported by the NDTV, said that they had entered India through Meghalaya’s Dawki and reached Guwahati; furthermore, they stayed at a city hotel.

The news channel further reported that the police source said that one of the arrested persons, during interrogation, told the police about the hotel where they had stayed, which eventually led the police team to the spot. Following this, after examining CCTV footage and other evidence, a case was registered by police at Pan Bazar Police Station.

Furthermore, a case was also registered against four people for their alleged involvement in the harboring and facilitation of the Bangladeshi nationals during their illegal stay.  These four people are Hazrat Ali, Amitrai Doimari, Vikas Paul, and Rajan Dhar.

As per the reports, Amitrai Doimari is the owner of the hotels, whereas Vikas and Rajan are the managers. The reports further state that Hazrat Ali is allegedly the main facilitator, and he used to transport the Bangladeshi nationals from the railway station to the hotel.

In yet another operation, 13 more Bangladeshi nationals were arrested on Wednesday. Police said that they all had allegedly been staying in Srinagar for the last 10 to 15 years before their return to Guwahati. They were, as per the reports, looking for a network to facilitate their exit from Assam so that they can return to Bangladesh.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police conducted a raid at another hotel in Guwahati, apprehending all 13 individuals. DCP Deka stated that proceedings for their expulsion from Assam are currently underway under the provisions of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act.

He further explained that the police would complete the necessary procedures and seek the requisite order from the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kamrup Metropolitan, before proceeding with the expulsion of the 13 individuals identified as Bangladeshi nationals from India. Meanwhile, police said the investigation remains ongoing, with officers seeking to establish the extent of the alleged network suspected of facilitating the movement and accommodation of foreign nationals in Assam. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
