India is a secular and democratic country. Its Constitution, under Article 19, guarantees freedom of speech and expression, putting reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2), to maintain law and order. Civil societies, Human rights organizations, and Media have been raising concern about discrimination against Muslim minority for several years. They have reported incidents in which Muslims have allegedly been targeted because of their religious identity. On January 14, 2026 in Balasore, Odisha, a Muslim man named Sheikh Makandar Mohammad, 35-year old, was allegedly lynched by a mob of cow vigilantes and was forced to chant religious slogans.
Over the blasphemous and deeply offensive remarks about the Prophet Muhammad, several public controversies have arisen in recent years. Kamlesh, Wasim Rizvi, Nupur Sharma, Yati Narsinghanand, T. Raja Singh and recently Nazia Elahi Khan have made remarks derogatory and offensive remarks about Islam or the Prophet Muhammad that Muslims. For Muslim in India, these incidents renewed debate over the balance between freedom of expression and the government’s responsibility to maintain communal harmony and protect religious rights.
For Muslims worldwide, the issue extends beyond politics. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the final messenger of Allah and serves as the highest moral example for humanity. He is more than a religious figure and a role model to the nation. In Quran Surah al-Ahzab, verse 21, Allah says: “Verily! you have in the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) an excellent model and a perfect role model for all of mankind.”
These statements, many observers argue, are not isolated incidents but reflect broader social and political narratives which, are amplified through sections of the media and social media. The political speeches, television debates and social media discussions often perceived as portraying Muslim community as separate from the national mainstream. This has increased mistrust between communities and harmed the unity of the country. The repeated communal rhetoric has made it easier to speak against Muslims and their belief which many critics argue is inconsistent with the constitutional values of equality and fraternity. What was earlier seen as provocative is now normalized.
Another issue often raised is the question of equal treatment. Minorities in the country are worried about indifferent treatment by authorities. An example mentioned is the case of Rajasthan-based influencer Naveen Chaudhary of Jhunjhunu Express. After posting a video critical of the RSS, he was reportedly arrested and his mobile phone was also seized.
Such incidents, regardless of one’s position, have reignited debate over equality before the law, minority rights and, freedom of expression. Critics have questioned why criticism of certain organisations appears to attract swift legal action, while cases involving remarks perceived as offensive to Muslims often become the subject of prolonged public and legal debate. Such comparisons have strengthened the belief among many that the standards of accountability are not always the same.
At its heart, this debate is not only about religion. It is also about equal treatment. It raises an important question: can a democracy remain healthy if sections of its population believe they are treated unequally?
India is a country consisting of a number of religions, various languages, and different cultures. Its strength is laid in its diversity: unity in diversity. Therefore, a public discussion should encourage harmony rather than division. A nation can grow faster when its citizens are able to live with dignity, security and mutual respect.
