Milan Kundera once said, “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” In today’s India, this quote rings more true than ever. As we navigate a time marked by state repression, communal violence, bulldozer justice, and manufactured amnesia, memory itself becomes an act of resistance. To forget is to become complicit. To remember is to fight back.

Paris: Following the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was considered the architect of the October 7 attacks in Israel last year, President Emmanuel Macron of France called on Friday for the release of hostages still held by Hamas.

On the social media platform X, Macron stated that Sinwar was the “primary individual” accountable for the “barbaric acts of October 7th.”

“Yahya Sinwar was the main person responsible for the terrorist attacks and barbaric acts of October 7th. Today, I think about the emotions of the victims, including 48 of our compatriots, and their loved ones. France demands the release of all hostages still held by Hamas,” Macron wrote on X.

Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden praised the elimination of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, describing it as a “good day” for both Israel and the world.

The U.S. President stated that the killing of the mastermind behind the Hamas attack on Israel “proves once again that no terrorists anywhere in the world can escape justice, no matter how long it takes.”

“To my Israeli friends, this is no doubt a day of relief and reminiscence, similar to the scenes witnessed throughout the United States after President Obama ordered the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011,” Biden said.

Israel has confirmed the death of Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 attacks last year.

The conflict in Gaza reignited after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Approximately 2,500 militants breached the border from the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 people, including citizens from more than 30 countries, and the abduction of more than 250 individuals as hostages.

In response to the October 7 attack, Israel initiated a counter-offensive against Hamas, pledging to dismantle the entire terror group while striving to minimize civilian casualties.
