Six Rajasthan Police Personnel Suspended Over Alleged Assault on RSS Functionary in Custody

Date:

Six police personnel, including the station house officer (SHO) of Narena police station in Jaipur Rural, have been suspended following allegations that an RSS functionary was stripped and assaulted in police custody, the Indian Express reported.  Krishna Avtar, an RSS pracharak in charge of Sambhar, alleged in a complaint that police personnel assaulted him, including on his private parts, while he was in custody. The FIR, accessed by FoEJ Media, registered on Sunday, also accuses the personnel of making insulting remarks about his family and his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

According to the complaint filed by Anurag Aagiwal, Avtar was taken to Narena police station around 9 pm on October 10 without any stated reason. The complaint questions the legal basis for his detention and whether he was formally arrested.

“While Krishna Avtar was on the road, personnel from Narena Police Station allegedly seized him and took him to the police station,” The F.I.R read.

It further alleges that Avtar was stripped, beaten and subjected to verbal abuse. When he identified himself as an RSS pracharak, the personnel allegedly continued the assault.

The complaint also alleges that the police personnel made the remark, “Sangh ne desh ko barbaad kar diya hai” (The RSS has ruined the country). Avtar’s condition reportedly deteriorated following the alleged assault, and he was subsequently admitted to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur for treatment, the Indian Express reported.

Investigating officer Anupam Mishra said the investigation had begun and Avtar’s statement was being recorded, the Indian Express reported.

RSS Media Wing Condemns Alleged Assault

The Jodhpur prant of Vishwa Samvad Kendra, the RSS’s media wing, described the alleged incident as “extremely shameful” in a post on X.

It said the alleged beating of an RSS pracharak in custody was “a resounding slap on the cheek of every volunteer”.

“The loyal pracharak of the very same RSS, from whose womb leaders who now sit on chairs have emerged, is lying bloodied and admitted in SMS hospital,” the post said.

The allegations also triggered a protest by former BJP MLA Ramlal Sharma and others on Sunday, who demanded action against the police personnel involved.

FIR Names Seven People

The FIR names seven people, including Narena police station SHO Umrav Singh. Six personnel, including Singh, have been suspended following the allegations. The case invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal intimidation. The complaint also calls for the preservation and examination of CCTV footage from the police station, official records and medical documents.

Following news of the alleged assault, several RSS volunteers gathered outside the police station on Sunday morning to protest. Sambhar Circle Officer Mukesh Joshi and former Phulera MLA Nirmal Chaudhary also visited Naraina police station in an effort to defuse tensions. Jaipur Rural Superintendent of Police Hanuman Prasad Meena said complaints alleging negligence had been received against six police personnel: SHO Umrao Gurjar, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Omkar and Ramesh, and constables Kuldeep, Mahipal and Vinod.

He added that the suspended personnel would be posted at the Jaipur Rural District Police Lines during the suspension period and would receive a subsistence allowance as per the rules.

“A departmental inquiry has been initiated, and all six personnel, including the SHO, have been suspended with immediate effect. During the suspension period, they will be posted at the Jaipur Rural District Police Lines and will be entitled to a subsistence allowance as per the rules,” he said as reported by the ETV Bharat.
