Russia Says India Has Not Communicated Any Plan to Halt Oil Purchases

Date:

Russia has not received any statements from India regarding the stoppage of Russian oil purchases, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, February 3.

“Moscow has not yet received any statements about India halting purchases of oil,” Peskov was quoted as saying while talking to the Russian media.

Trump, on this account, Truth Social, posted on Monday that India and the US agreed to a trade deal in which Washington will charge reciprocal tariffs on Delhi at 18%, which earlier was 25%.

His comments came a day after US President Donald Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “agreed to stop buying Russian oil and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela.”

“It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi, of India, this morning. He is one of my greatest friends and a powerful and respected leader of his country,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement,” Modi said on X.

“When two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation,” Modi added.

Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India last year, which were among the highest in the world, including 25% levies for its purchases of Russian energy.

As per the reports of real-time analytics company Kpler, Russian oil accounted for just 0.2% of all crude oil that India imported till 2021.  Meantime, India’s import of Russian crude oil also dropped to around 1.1 million barrels per day in the time period of the first three weeks of January.

Iraq now supplies almost the same quantity as that of Russia, which makes up an average of 904,000 bpd in December 2025, according to Kpler.

Meantime, the volumes from Saudi Arabia have also surged up to 942,000 bpd in January; earlier, it was 710,000 bpd in December.
