A massive eviction drive was carried out at Alamganj in Assam’s Dhubri district on Sunday, removing as many as 520 families from 650 bighas of land.
The eviction drive started at 6 am under heavy police deployment. The operation was conducted with 60 excavators, with a massive police force monitoring the operation.
For now the area has been sealed, with restrictions on the entry of the outsiders, a local from Assam told FoEJ Media. The claim has not been verified. The local has also confirmed the action and has claimed that a few more horses are yet to be razed down.
An atmosphere of sorrow prevailed at the mausoleums and graveyards, where hundreds gathered in prayer. The visuals of the scenes have traveled the internet.
Reports have also emerged that the excavator stopped working when it was brought in to demolish the mausoleum. Its operator fell ill during the incident and was taken for medical treatment; the local too told about it to FoEJ Media.
A protest was also staged against the demolition of Kamel Peer Sahabduddin Aulia Mazar, and residents offered prayers at the site.
According to Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath, the clearance of approximately 650 bighas of land was almost complete.
“The total area under consideration comprises approximately 800 bighas of land involving around 800 families. Of this, nearly 150 bighas involve approximately 160 petitioners whose cases are pending before the court,” Nath said.
The administration said around 80 percent of residents had left the area with their belongings before the demolition exercise began. Residents who failed to furnish the required documents were given 15 days to vacate the land.
Days before the eviction, authorities had disconnected electricity to the houses, forcing families to leave. A few families remained on the land after moving court against the eviction and seeking legal relief. The next hearing is scheduled for November 13.
Earlier this October, the Assam government evicted more than 1,100 Muslim families over two days, predominantly from the Bengali-speaking Muslims, in a demolition drive across the Nagaon, Golagahat, and Hojai districts.
The Assam government razed down the homes of as many as 600 Muslim families in Nagon district’s Lutumari Longjap Reserve Forest on the second day of the demolition drive. On the first day, authorities evicted 547 families across three districts under tight security.
A resident of Lutumari, who has faced the brunt of eviction, told FoEJ Media that “people are facing immense trouble because of the eviction.” They don’t know where to go now. They haven’t eaten anything in days.”
Earlier to this in 2025, a major eviction drive was carried out. It aimed at clearing alleged encroachments on Paikan Reserve Forest land, FoEJ Media had earlier reported on this eviction drive, where residents said that the demolition drive has been nothing short of a series of devastating blows. The home they had built over the years was reduced to rubble in a matter of hours, leaving her and her family with nothing but fragments of a life once lived.
