Six police personnel in Bihar’s West Champaran district have been suspended following the death of a 25-year-old man who was arrested in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police said on Monday. The deceased, identified as Dilshad Ansari, was a resident of Badhayi Tola in Auraiya, under the Banuchhapar police station area in Bettiah. He was an accused in NDPS case number 65/25, registered on August 8, 2025, and was attached to the Sahodra police station in West Champaran.
The suspended personnel include two sub-inspectors, Ravi Shankar Kumar and Arun Kumar, and four constables: Saudagar Kumar Yadav, Raj Kumar Rishi, Kundan Kumar and Suman Kumar. All six were suspended with immediate effect, according to a statement issued by Bettiah police late Monday evening. In its statement, police said Ansari was being taken to Sahodra police station after his arrest from Banuchhapar when he allegedly jumped from the moving vehicle and sustained serious injuries.
“After his arrest from Banuchhapar, Dilshad was being taken to Sahodra police station when he jumped from the running vehicle and, as a result, suffered grievous injuries. He was rushed to the subdivisional hospital at Narkatiaganj and later referred to GMCH at Bettiah, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors,” said police in its statement.
Ansari’s family has disputed the police account and demanded a high-level inquiry into the circumstances of his death.
His wife, Nagma Khatoon, said a police team arrived at their home around 2 am on Monday and took her husband into custody. According to her, the police assured the family that he would be released by morning after questioning.
“It was around 2am on Monday, a police team raided our house and took my husband into custody, assuring the family members that he would be free by morning after interrogation. But in the morning, a caller from Banuchhapar police station asked us to come to GMCH, saying that my husband had fallen sick. We found him lying dead in the hospital when we came here,” the deceased’s wife, Nagma Khatoon, said as reported by the Hindustan Times
“However, in the morning, a caller from Banuchhapar police station asked us to come to GMCH, saying that my husband had fallen sick. We found him lying dead in the hospital when we came here,” she said.
Ansari’s father, Akhbar Ansari, also called for a high-level investigation, alleging that his son had been assaulted by the police.
“My son died after he was hit hard on his head by police,” he alleged, the Hindustan Times further reported.
The suspension of the six personnel comes amid conflicting accounts of how Ansari sustained the injuries that led to his death. His family has sought an inquiry into the incident, while police have attributed his injuries to an alleged jump from a moving vehicle.
