Seven Arrested in Bangladesh Over Lynching of Hindu Man, Says Yunus-Led Government

Date:

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven people in connection with the case of lynching and killing a Hindu man named Dipu Das over allegations of blasphemy.

“In the incident of beating to death Sanatan Dharma adherent youth Dipu Chandra Das (27) in Valuka, Mymensingh, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven individuals as suspects. The arrested individuals are— Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain, Md. Manik Mia, 4 Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain, and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon. RAB-14 conducted operations at various locations and arrested the aforementioned suspects,” the Chief Advisor wrote on X.

The move came just two days ahead of the mob accused the deceased of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The killing has also drawn political reactions across the border in India. In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit condemned the incident, raising concerns over the safety of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. The party further sought to link the incident to domestic politics, criticising the Mamata Banerjee government and alleging a failure to protect Hindu lives in the state.

“This is how a Hindu, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched, hanged, and burnt in Bangladesh last night. This is not just about Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh; it is also about Hargobindo Das and Chandan Das, who faced the same fate in West Bengal under Mamata. Whether in West Bengal under Mamata or in Bangladesh under Yunus, they were killed because they were Hindu,” the state BJP wrote on X.

Hindu Man Lynched in Bangladesh over Blasphemy

A Hindu man identified as Dipu Chandra Das has been lynched by a mob over alleged blasphemy in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Thursday night ahead of the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, the BBC Bangla reported.

Das was a young garment factory worker and was a tenant in the Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka Upazila.  As per the reports, a local group accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Following this, he was attacked at around 9 pm.

The police recovered Das’ lifeless body and further sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination.

The details of the incidents as reported by the officials claim that the mob beat Dipu Chandra Das to death, then tied his body to a tree and set it ablaze.

Meanwhile, the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government condemned the lynching of a Hindu man, asserting that there is no place for communal hatred or mob violence in what it described as a “New Bangladesh.”

“No one involved in the brutal killing would be spared,” and he assured strict action against those responsible. It also urged citizens to “remain vigilant against violence instigated by what it called isolated terrorist groups seeking to destabilize the country,” the government said in a statement.

Whether in West Bengal under Mamata or in Bangladesh under Yunus, they were killed because they were Hindu.”  The West Bengal unit of the BJP also condemned the killing and said.
