Hamas’s Actions Don’t Represent Palestinians: President Mahmoud Abbas

Date:

In a significant development, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the actions and policies of terror group Hamas do not represent the Palestinian people, according to official news agency WAFA.

The statement comes amidst the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, where tensions have escalated due to indiscriminate attacks by Israel.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has a long and complex history. In recent times, the situation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated, leading to civilian casualties, displacement, and worst humanitarian crises.

Abbas emphasized that the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) remains the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. The PLO is an umbrella organization that includes various Palestinian factions, and it has historically been recognized as the official representative in international forums.

During a phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Abbas reaffirmed his rejection of civilian casualties on both sides. He called for the release of civilians, prisoners, and detainees caught in the crossfire, according to the news agency.

Maduro expressed Venezuela’s unconditional support for the Palestinian cause and offered 30 tonnes of humanitarian aid to be sent to the Palestinian people in the coming days.

Demand for Ceasefire:

Both leaders agreed to demand an immediate ceasefire and establish a humanitarian assistance corridor. The goal is to alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the conflict. Additionally, they stressed the importance of returning to “international legality” in resolving the crisis.

The ongoing war has had devastating consequences for civilians in Gaza. Israel’s relentless bombing has flattened neighborhoods, resulting in over 2,670 deaths, with most of the victims being ordinary Palestinians. Aid groups have warned of a humanitarian disaster, with approximately one million people displaced and severe water shortages.

As tensions persist, Abbas’s bold stance against Hamas highlights the complexities of Palestinian politics and underscores the urgent need for peace negotiations and humanitarian relief in the region.
