A Class 10 boy and girl from a local school in Bihar’s Jamui district were molested and harassed by a group of men on Saturday evening as they made their way back from coaching classes. The incident came to light after the video of it went viral on social media.
The two minors had visited Madwa Pahad, a well-known hillside spot in the city, before starting their journey home. On their way back, a group of men forced their scooter to a halt and began hurling abuse before physically assaulting them. Unbeknownst to the victims, one of the assailants filmed the entire incident, and the footage was subsequently shared widely on social media, igniting public anger.
Visuals from the video show one of the men seizing the boy by his shirt collar in an attempt to drag him closer. With the girl’s assistance, the boy managed to break free, and the pair attempted to flee the scene, only to be pursued by the group.
The assault intensified further when another man grabbed the girl by her neck and lifted her off the ground. Amid the chaos, one of the assailants inappropriately touched her.
Even as the two minors tried to escape, the harassment did not let up. As they attempted to ride away on their scooter with the girl seated behind the boy, one of the men grabbed her hand in an effort to stop them, while another continued filming the ordeal on his phone.
Furthermore, the group can be seen coercing the two minors into apologizing before letting them go. The girl is heard begging the men, saying, “Please let us go; we promise that we will never come back here again.” The assailants eventually relented and allowed the two to leave.
The incident came to light only after the video went viral, leading the local police to launch an investigation. Authorities have since arrested three individuals in connection with the case, officials said.
As part of the probe, investigators recorded statements from both minors to piece together details about their assailants.
“The video from Jamui, Bihar, is deeply disturbing. Two Class 10 students were stopped on a road, harassed, humiliated, and molested. A young girl, hands folded, begged to be let go while goons groped her and dragged her away,” Rahul Gandhi said, condemning the incident.
“Who gave these men the right to behave like this? This is not “culture.” It is patriarchy: the belief that any man can police a girl’s body, her movement, and her choices. Every individual in that video must be identified and prosecuted under POCSO, and justice must be swift,” he added.
“And if the incident happened on September 19th, why are the culprits not behind bars yet? And the Bihar government must answer why a girl is not safe on a public road at 7 pm, he said.
