Activist Sharjeel Imam has been granted interim bail from October 4 to 10 to attend his cousin brother’s wedding, his brother Muzammil wrote on X. “Interim bail has been granted to my brother Sharjeel Imam for attending our cousin’s marriage from 4th to 10th October 2026,” he wrote.
This comes days before the Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear Imam’s regular bail plea on September 30 in a case associated with the Northeast Delhi riots, which claimed the lives of at least 53 people, the majority of them being Muslim.
The hearing was adjourned on September 21 as the prosecution sought more time, as Additional Solicitor S. V. Raju, appearing for the state, was ill. Following this, a bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Dinesh Bhatt listed the matter for September 30.
Earlier than this, in March, the imam was granted an interim bail for 10 days to attend his brother’s wedding and take care of his ailing mother.
Imam has been in custody since January 2020 in the case associated with the Northeast Delhi riots. He has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The Delhi Police Special Cell is investigating the case under FIR 59 of 2020, filed under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Imam, Khalid, and the other accused have denied all allegations against them. The court highlighted that all accused in the case did not stand on the same footing in terms of “hierarchy of participation.”
On 5 January, earlier this year, the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, finding a prima facie case against them under the UAPA. The bail was granted to five co-accused, namely Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmad.
Later, a fresh bail was filed in June 2026; however, on July 4, it was rejected. The Delhi Police opposed Imam’s bail, describing Imam and Khalid as alleged “masterminds” of the conspiracy. On September 30, the Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear Imam’s regular bail plea.
Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others were booked under the UAPA and provisions of the IPC on allegations that they conspired in the Delhi riots 2020, which killed at least 53 people, mostly from the Muslim community. Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others were said to be the “masterminds” behind the case.
