Milan Kundera once said, “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” In today’s India, this quote rings more true than ever. As we navigate a time marked by state repression, communal violence, bulldozer justice, and manufactured amnesia, memory itself becomes an act of resistance. To forget is to become complicit. To remember is to fight back.

On the nation’s constitution day, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that the celebration of Constitution day is not right at a time when people have lost their lives in Sambhal. He further alleged that the leaders of Opposition are not being allowed to visit the violence ridden area in Uttar Pradesh.

What Happened in Sambhal? “They could have held a discussion, we are not against the survey…”

“The true celebration of the Constitution is when we follow it, ” Yadav said

“We are Samajwadi (socialists), Babasaheb BR Ambedkar’s Constitution protects us and gives us our rights. We respect the Constitution but to celebrate at a time when many people have lost their lives in Sambhal is not right,” he added.

The country is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution. On November 26, 1949, the constitution assembly adopted the constitution at the Central Hall of Parliament.

भाजपा का ये राजनीतिक दोहरापन देश और… pic.twitter.com/sVm4Vw49Xa

“What has been done by the government in Sambhal, people have lost their lives. Justice is being denied, people are being accused in false cases,” Yadav alleged.

“The government is filing false cases against our MP, MLA and son of the MLA. Government is at fault. When the survey was done once, what was the need for the survey a second time?” he said.

What Happened in Sambhal?

The unrest began when a large crowd gathered to protest the survey, which was ordered following claims that the mosque was built on the site of a Hindu temple. Protesters attempted to obstruct the survey team, leading to stone-pelting and arson against police vehicles

Authorities deployed tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.

There were conflicting reports regarding the source of gunfire; while families of the deceased alleged police firing, officials stated that rioters had used firearms

In response to the violence, local authorities imposed a ban on outsiders entering Sambhal and suspended internet services to prevent further unrest. Schools in the area were closed as a precautionary measure

“They could have held a discussion, we are not against the survey…”

Following the clash, Yadav questioned, “They could have held a discussion, we are not against the survey, but there were BJP workers raising slogans while the team was conducting the survey. Was any action taken against them?”

“The government has banned the Internet, imposed curfew so that the Opposition cannot reach there. Our LoPs of both the houses want to go there but the government is not giving us permission,” he added.
