Following the killing of a Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable in an attack in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, security forces have detained as many as 2500 people, the Kashmir News Observer reported. The news outlet reported by quoting an official.
Kashmir Crackdown Follows Deadly Anantnag Attack
The crackdown started soon after the head constable Ashiq Hussain was shot dead during Amarnath Yatra duty near Anantnag’s Lal Chowk. The killing occurred at around 12:30 pm. As per the officials, teams of the Jammu and Kashmir police, army, and central armed police forces (CAPFs) launched coordinated raids to dismantle the support system of the attacker’s network.
The attack was condemned by Chief Minister Omar Abdulla and Governor Manoj Sinha. Taking to the social media platform, Abdullah said, “Deeply saddened by the death in the line of duty of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain of IRP 3rd Battalion J&K Police. HC Hussain made the ultimate sacrifice in a cowardly terror attack in the Anantnag area of South Kashmir. I unequivocally condemn this attack & send my heartfelt condolences to the members of his family. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat.”
Meanwhile, Sinha said, “The whole country stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the family of the martyr. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack. This heinous act will not go unpunished.”
Officials said vehicle checking has also been intensified in several districts, and in Handwara, special checkpoints have been established. The measures are directed at preventing further attacks. Meantime, the public is urged to cooperate with security personnel during the ongoing checking drives.
On Thursday, authorities demolished the houses of two Lashkar e Taiba militants in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. The demolished properties, as per the officials, belonged to Aadil Ahmad Thokar of Bijbehara and Haroon Rashid of Hassanpora.
Earlier than this, in April 2024, following the Pahalgam terror attack, Aadil’s family demolished another where his ancestral house was razed down.
