Amidst the CJP protest turning violent, where students alleged Delhi police beat the protestors while later denying it, a new notification popped up on social media claiming that the Delhi police have been granted permission of detention under NSA. However, the Delhi Police on Thursday said that the Union government’s decision to exercise detention power under the NSA is a routine administrative measure and is not related to the ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak.
“Misleading information is circulating on social media claiming that the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, has been granted detention powers under the National Security Act (NSA) specifically to suppress the ongoing CJP protests,” Delhi Police’s statement read.
“The order in question is a routine, quarterly extension of powers under the NSA, which is conventionally renewed every three months. The current renewal was issued on 07.07.2026 for the period effective from 19.07.2026 to 18.10.2026, predating the commencement of the CJP protests,” the statement added.
“No specific request was initiated for this order in relation to recent events. The renewal constitutes a standard administrative procedure and has been misinterpreted out of context,” the statement read.
The notice of Delhi police says that Delhi Police commissioner Anurag Kumar has been authorized to exercise preventive detention powers under the NSA for three months. The three-month period starts on July 19 and ends on October 18. A wave of comments erupted as it coincidentally occurred during the turmoil of protest led by CJP.
The protest took place in light of the alleged NEET paper leak, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest led by CJP asked permission for the peaceful sit-in in advance.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20 demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over repeated NEET-UG paper leaks and irregularities. The group sought Delhi Police permission for the sit-in in advance and said it would remain peaceful.
On July 20, the protestors aimed to march towards the parliament at the start of the monsoon session. However, soon the protest turned violent as the police cracked down on students making rounds on the internet.
